Liberty has never come from the government. Liberty has always come from the subjects of government. The history of liberty is the history of resistance. The history of liberty is a history of the limitation of governmental power, not the increase of it --Woodrow Wilson

Hamas and culture

The new minister for Culture has taken a firm hold on things that might enrage the average citizen in the Palestine Authority terrirtories. Attallah Abu al-Sibbah is very open and says he loves Jesus in the interview with the Guardian, however when the dancing comes up on the agenda al-Sibbah is everything but understanding.

"If the phenomenon of bellydancing spreads our people might react against it by killing people. We don't want our people to become like the Taliban."

Yes, we must forbid it, the scourge of bellydance killings have been unaddressed long enough, it is ranking up there with only cartoon drawing as the number one killer in the Middle East, it is good that they finally realise this...

Hamas is out of money

Seems that Hamas has run out of money, they won't be able to pay off the civil servants soon enough. Strange how they seem upset that the international community actually demand that they behave like leaders now that they are.
They still refuse to acknowledge Israel and they have not yet dismantled the terrorists working in PA territory. The most humorous of all is that the Arab nations refuse to pay the PA any money, seems that it is allright to pay suicide bombers money but not to pay for the day to day business in PA, a Palestine that is always on their mind and fighting the "evil" states. Well seems now that the "evil" states are the ones that have been paying for everything and now they are out of money, now we will see how big the "solidarity" is between the Arab nations.

They should pay for their own mess I say.

Thai No vote

Seems like Thaksin, leader of Thais Love Thai party has been slapped in the face, as predicted he lost the south where the dominating Muslim population really didn't like him putting three army divisions in order to counter a Muslim "insurgency", martial law apparently did not appeal to the constituents there.

More surprising is the turnout of voters in Bangkok, an amazing number of people came to the polls to fill out a blank vote, or rather a "No Vote" as it is known in Thailand.

"The number of abstentions is higher than expected, which may force Thaksin to be absent from a new government," Pongpan Apinyakul, a senior analyst at Kim Eng Securities, said.

Interesting to see if Thaksin will step down after this, his behaviour, while legal has been morally dubious changing laws to enable the sale of his own stakes in companies and avoiding taxes. Thaksins support in the North is still strong, mainly because he has "bought" the poor votes by extending goverment grants and subsidies, his politics in all has though been a disaster for Thailand. While countries such as Pakistan is seeign a boom of 8% GDP growth, the Thai growth was recently downgraded to three percent for 2006.

We will see what happens
