A constitution without the people
France voted no in the referendum, why we ask.
People didn't say no to the constitution itself, I doubt the majority even read a word of it, they are simply saying no with their guts and it's also a reaction against the sitting goverment with Chirac and Rafarrin, Rafarrin will probably take the fall for this one and no doubt we will see Villepin take over the gov't. Just a guess but it's basically only in Sweden a sitting gov't can lose a referendum and remain in place like nothing happened. Chirac has seen himself as the informal leader of EU, the French always had an affinity for grandeur, he will no longer be that. Calling to a referendum and lose will not be a feather in his cap. Chirac is finished and I hope we won't see more of him now.
I was hoping for this constitution to pass but as soon as countries started talking about referendums I knew it was doomed, people simply do not like change and most are convinced that EU is bad.
In Sweden for example the sitting gov't has blamed all ill things on EU, or had others do it for them without bothering enlighten anyone as to the true facts, the result has been that people instinctivly do not like it anymore, they don't have a clue about it they just don't like it.
Experience shows that referendums will not work, people are simply to stupid to be able to make an educated choice, this is why we have parlamentarism here, we elect politicians that are supposed to make these choices for us because it is their job to do so.
The whole thing is actually infuriating, we need the new constitution, we need to move away fron the stifling veto rules that for decades has paralyzed the UN, we need the majority rule and we need to define EU in order to be able to be competitive, the way it is now it will wither and die soon because all countries politicians blame EU for everything that goes wrong or for "uncomfortable" decisions when cutting back social security due to overinflated gov't.
One positive sidenote is that the new constitution will probably be more liberal/conservative since the winds of change are blowing over Europe, in time for the next EU meeting Germany and Sweden will probably have liberal/conservative gov't, we will see what happens then...
Sincerely
